CVSRA Training Opportunities

CVSRA Referees,

The spring season will be here before you know it. Are you ready? Players have already hit the practice fields in anticipation of the spring season.

Have you?

Have you gotten rid of that winter “excess” from too many sweets over the holidays? Are you ready to run off the “one or two too many” from Super Bowl Sunday?

CVSRA is offering many training opportunities to all members to kick off the spring season. The physical pre-season training is left to you – the classroom training we can offer many different topics.

Last night we had well over 100 enthusiastic referees attend the Scholastic Pre-Season Meeting and banquet. We had standing room only!!! It was great to see so many of you there.

Below is a list of the other CVSRA sponsored training sessions to start the 2022 spring season!!

We are asking for pre-registration to assist us with the planning and all sessions will be held (except for last night and the Coaches/Referees Symposium) via Zoom).

Feb 15th 7:15 – 8:45 p.m. Coaches/Referees Symposium. This is open only for those referees that have the whistle or wish to have the whistle for VHSL contests. The meeting is NOT via Zoom, and will be held at Deep Run High School. If you are interested in this please email me directly.

Feb 19th 7:00 - 8:15 p.m. Scholastic Pre-Season Make-Up Meeting. This is for all referees that wish to work the 2022 Scholastic Spring season and were unable to attend the Banquet on Feb 10th. All Scholastic Referees must attend one scholastic pre-season meeting (either Feb 10 or Feb 19 – unless you are an associate member and attended a meeting with another VHSL association).

Feb 22nd 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Adult League (CVSA) Referee Pre-Season Meeting. There are many factors and items that are unique to working the adult leagues. In particular – we have “paperwork” that must be filed that is not required in any other league. Fouls are different – as they are adults. And language rules are applied a “little” different.

Feb 23rd 7:00 – 8:15 p.m. Youth and “New” Referee Pre-Season Meeting. You are now a referee and you are starting to get assigned games. Are you ready? Are you familiar with the “build-out lines?” At what age level can you “head the ball?” What is the re-start if a player heads the ball – that may not head the ball for that age level? These examples and many more will be reviewed. This training session is not the same as the Orientation session that many of you have already attended where you learned how to use “Arbiter” and to “Get Assigned Games.” This is all about “what do you do now that you are on the field and this happens or that happens?”

Feb 24th 7:00 – 7:45 p.m. 2-Person Referee System of Control. Many have signed up for working the scholastic games that may have games that are managed with the 2-person system. You have been trained to work games with a single person or a 3-persom system. Do you need to review the 2-person? All of our middles school games use the 2-person, and the majority of the smaller private schools use the 2-person system.

Feb 28th 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Stepped Approach for Dealing with Dissent. Al Scholastic games will employ the Stepped Approach when dealing with dissent from players. It is different from the USSF technique of Ask, Tell, Send. Are you working scholastic games? Are you familiar with this technique? The VHSL coaches will be evaluating you on how well you use his system and “when” you by-pass this system. We will be reviewing this also at the Coaches/Referees Symposium on Feb 15th.

Looking ahead. Plans are currently under way to offer a mid-season training session for “lesson learned” from the Coaches’ and Peer Evaluations from the Scholastic Leagues for the evening of April 6th. We are also re-scheduling the twice postponed Youth Referee Summit for April 7th. Look for details and more information soon.
