Referee Spotlight

CVSRA Congratulates Our All-Metro Player Referees!

Alevia Colombell, Ella Chewning, & Kiera Ferguson

Alevia Colombell

For Alevia, playing and officiating go hand in hand. Officiating has given her a deeper perspective on the game—helping her see patterns, anticipate passes, and read the field in ways that aren’t always visible as a player. This broader vision has made her a more strategic and aware defender, always thinking one step ahead of the attack. At the same time, her experience as a player sharpens her officiating, allowing her to anticipate movement and position herself with precision before the play unfolds.

One key difference she notes is the mindset each role requires. “Games as players can get heated,” Alevia says, “but as an official, you must stay calm and control the game.” That ability to manage emotions and maintain composure sets her apart in both roles.

As she begins college, Alevia plans to continue both playing and officiating. CVSRA is proud of her dedication to the game and grateful for her impact as both a player and a referee. Keep it up, Alevia!

Ella Chewning

Ella is a dedicated referee who believes that officiating has made her a stronger, smarter player. The two roles complement each other—each enhancing the other and deepening her overall understanding of the game. Officiating helps her stay composed and focused during high-pressure matches, while playing gives her insight into what athletes need and expect from a great referee.

For Ella, the biggest difference between the two roles lies in their purpose. “As a player, your only goal is to win,” she says. “But as a referee, your responsibility is to keep the game fair and safe. Both roles demand different mindsets to be successful.”

CVSRA is proud to recognize Ella’s dedication and passion for the game in both capacities. Congratulations, Ella, and thank you for your commitment on and off the field!

For Kiera, officiating has transformed her understanding of the game and elevated her performance as a player. Her knowledge of the rules allows her to better anticipate calls and make smarter decisions on the field, making her a more well-rounded and successful athlete. As a referee, Kiera brings a player’s perspective, connecting with athletes through shared passion and using her experience to educate and support them—especially younger players, who benefit from her ability to explain the “why” behind each call.

She believes that knowing the Laws of the Game is essential in both roles. Her dual perspective helps her build trust with players, coaches, and parents, and make confident, timely decisions when it matters most.

CVSRA is incredibly proud of Kiera’s accomplishments as both a player and an official! We look forward to seeing her continue to grow in both areas. Good luck, Kiera!
